RunFlat system: feasibility of installation

Nowadays, all wheel sellers use the concept of RunFlat as rubber wheels with reinforced cord and tread. They claim that installing run flat wheels will protect the driver and passengers of an armored vehicle.     But in reality: is this so? No!     Run-flat (or runflat) is a safety pneumatic tire technology for automotive vehicles with an additional resistance ring or insert that is attached to the wheel and can support the weight of the vehicle in the event of puncture of the rubber coating and loss of pressure.

    We use special plastic rings (wheels), which we mount directly on a light-alloy cast or steel wheel, firmly securing it with special puffs. They fill the entire plane between the disc and the rubber wheel. The plastic used in the production of RunFlats has a special composition that is not afraid of side shots. And even when the car was ambushed, or heavy fire began on it, the system will allow you to take an armored car out of the firing point on these very “steering wheels”, when the tires in the wheels are shot through or the full moon is destroyed. But not just take it out, but move at a speed of up to 60 km/h for a distance of up to 70 km.
    So, summing up the above, I can firmly state: an armored car without a RunFlat system is not a fully protected armored car!

Should I replace my door hinges with reinforced ones?

Car armoring requires:- all-round armoring with ballistic steel of the appropriate level of protection;- armoring the floor and roof of the vehicle with anti-fragmentation soft armored steel;- replacing the entire car glass with armored glass, in which the width determines the level of protection.That is, the main issue with booking is the increase in vehicle weight.

    This leads to additional load on the components and assemblies of a civilian car. But the mechanical components that are most frequently used suffer the most. And these are door hinges! Of course, the weight of the armor and the weight of the glass especially have an impact, because the weight of the armored vehicle increases by 840 and sometimes by 1200 kilograms. More than a ton of extra weight!
    And, if you do not replace the door hinges, the door will quickly sag and stop opening.
    Which hinges should I change to?
    Of course - reinforced ones, or better yet - reinforced monolithic ones. Any play in the modified hinges will soon reveal itself. And this is: replacing bushings or replacing hinges in general. Therefore, if your budget allows, you should definitely spend money on special monolithic reinforced door hinges. They will show themselves very quickly, believe me!

Armored glass: Ukrainian or imported?

  Armored glass is one of the main components of an armored car. In addition to the usual function of maintaining high-quality inspection, bulletproof glass must protect the driver and passengers in the capsule of the armored car. Which glass to choose for full booking?  There have been several manufacturers of armored glass in Ukraine for a long time. These plants arose a long time ago and usually served the needs of the Soviet-era defense industry. A lot of time has passed, but the models of armored personnel carriers or other armored vehicles have not changed. The production of armored glass worked using old technologies. Yes, this is a generally accepted multilayer production of armored glass; it is used all over the world today. But global technologies keep up with the times, use improved materials, and work to reduce the thickness of the glass block itself. But why?

  • To learn more

    The thickness of the glass is proportional to its weight, and the greater the thickness, the heavier the glass. This is an additional load on the window lift mechanisms, on door hinges, an additional load on the engine and vehicle components. In the modern world, everyone is working to reduce weight through the use of new technologies and modern materials. European manufacturers have long been producing armored glass of protection level B6 with a thickness of 37 mm or more. The Ukrainian analogue of B6 is the PZSA-4 level. This level corresponds to a glass thickness of 42 mm made in Ukraine. It's a little thicker and therefore heavier. In addition, the transparency of glass components and the level of their distortion are of great importance. Another factor in the quality of armored glass is the level of protection against UV rays. In the production of armored glass, a special PVC film is used between the layers of glass, which glues the surfaces of the glass. If it is of poor quality, then within a year, if the car is used intensively under the influence of sunlight, the glass will delaminate, followed by distortion, limited visibility and the inability to drive an armored vehicle.Having carefully studied the proposals of Ukrainian and global manufacturers, I can say with confidence: the quality of imported glass is definitely an order of magnitude higher than that of Ukrainian manufacturers. In addition to transparency and light weight, imported manufacturers use higher quality materials in the manufacture of bulletproof glass of different thicknesses. They provide a 3 year warranty. But the deciding factor in choosing a Ukrainian or imported product can be the price. Ukrainian glass is definitely cheaper with decent quality.

PZSA – 4 or B6? How to determine the level of protection of a car?

    Car armored is a complex production process. But before you give your car for armoring, you need to decide on the level of protection of the car. Many people use the term B6, Ukrainian standards are prescribed as PZSA-4, modern European levels of protection are qualified as VPAM7. So what's the difference?     This is all the same level of car protection :-) You can call it whatever you want, but in all these cases the car will be protected from a regular 7.62 caliber machine gun cartridge without a steel tip. The thickness of the armor plate in this case is 6.5 mm, the thickness of the armored glass is from 39 mm (depending on the manufacturer of the armored glass).
PZSA-4, B6, VPAM7 are “Capsule” type armor. What does this include?

  • To learn more

    Replacement of all glass with armored glass;
    Engine compartment armor;
    Ballistic protection of the radiator, battery, control unit and fuel tank(s);
    Car floor armoring;
    Armoring of car doors with replacement or strengthening of door hinges;
    Car roof armoring;
    Replacement or strengthening of car suspension;
    Replacing or strengthening the brake system;
    Installation of the RunFlat system.

    First of all, you need to decide: for what tasks will the car be used? From this it will be decided what level of protection your car will be reserved for.
